For me this seemed to be a logical next step once I was home and happened gradually. I went through the thought process of considering what items do I have that a are
likely to carry significance or provide others particular joy. What items show the type of person I was, my acheivements, results etc..
This being the modern age it of course included electronic documents and mny media files. Also are there any that need updating, such as diaries etc..
Collation of electronic Items
-
Media - Family photos, video etc.. - I had 1000's of these across different sources and spent
quite some time; pulling them into a signuar location. i then saved backups and put snpshots of
key items onto the childrens drives who were now interested. We
had fun also a few evenings re-dicovering and watching the films and photos again. I also had and indexed some digital photos and films taken whilst I was growing up
-
Key school / university projects - By now and increasingly this will be electronic. I was keen to save down my final year project and certain course work. Partly for my children
to see my school work and also on a practical level as some of it might be useful from an educational standpoint (e.g. course on digitial media, final year projects one
a website and one on an early form of machine learning)
-
Childrens diaries I had one for each but quickly saw they needed some updating. Whilst I was there I also added pictures and media directly to the documents to bring them
to life more.
Collation of household documents, airlooms etc..
-
Family airlooms - What were the things I had that were always thought to be family hand me downs and where should they go.
This included: paintings, old family collage and certain photo frames.
-
My acheivements - What were the things I had that were always thought to be acheivements, academic or otherwise.
This included: school work - paintings in particular, running / cycling medals, trophies, graduation photos
-
Things important to me / snapshots of when I was growing up - What were the things I had that were key to me whilst growing up or said something about me.
This included: collections (sticker, badge, beano annuals), retro games, chrystals / fossials found when younger,
-
Things that have some relevence and meaning. An example being a coffee machine which will become my sisters. As I often use when she's round and would like to impart some
coffee knowledge on her!
